Ethiopia has selected its men’s and women’s marathon team for the 2017 World Championships, scheduled August 04 -13, 2017 in London, Great Britain. Multiple Olympic and World Champions, Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba, lead the men and women team. Both Bekele and Dibaba, who had great successes over the track, have also become among some of the fastest runners in the marathon. In late 2016, Bekele ran the second fastest marathon of all time, winning the Berlin Marathon in 2:03:03 ahead of Wilson Kipsang of Kenya. In her only 2nd marathon ever, Dibaba also ran one of the fastest times over the distance in May 2017 at the London Marathon, finishing in 2:17.56 behind Mary Keitany of Kenya, who broke the women-only world record that day, covering the distance (26.2 miles) in 2:17:01. At this year’s World Championships in London, both Bekele and Dibaba aim to add another gold medal to their world championship gold medal collections they have won on the track. The defending champion on the women’s side, Mare Dibaba, will be using her wildcard to try and defend her title she won in 2015 in Beijing, China. Mare Dibaba was the first Ethiopian woman to win a world title in a marathon.
